David Edward Kelley (born April 4, 1956) is a television writer, producer, and former attorney best known for his work on Doogie Howser, M.D., Picket Fences, Chicago Hope, The Practice, Ally McBeal, Boston Public, Boston Legal, Harry’s Law, Goliath, Big Little Lies, Mr. Mercedes, Big Sky, and Nine Perfect Strangers, as well as several films. Kelley is one of the few screenwriters whose work has appeared on all four major commercial U.S. television networks (ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC), as well as the cable giant HBO.

Kelley was born in Waterville, Maine, and grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts, where she attended Belmont Hill School. His father, Jack Kelley, is a member of the US Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.
