Adam H. Spiegel (Spike Jonze), the son of Arthur H. Spiegel III and Sandra L. Granzow, was born in New York City. His father was of German and Jewish descent. Jonze is Arthur Spiegel’s grandson and Joseph Spiegel’s great-great-grandson, the founder of the Spiegel catalog.
Jonze was raised in Maryland. After graduating from high school in 1987, he relocated to Los Angeles. He became an assistant editor and later a photographer for the independent biking magazine Freestylin’ after becoming an avid BMX rider.

As a teenager, Jonze began photographing BMX riders and skateboarders for Freestylin’ Magazine and Transworld Skateboarding, as well as co-founding the youth culture magazine Dirt. He began shooting street skateboarding films, including the influential Video Days, after moving into filmmaking (1991).
Adaptation, Jonze’s second feature film, was directed in 2002 and co-written by Kaufman. The acclaimed dramedy follows Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage), a screenwriter who struggles to adapt a book about orchids into a film.
Jonze rose to prominence after creating and executive producing the television series Jackass (2000-02) and the subsequent films Jackass: The Movie (2002) and Jackass: Number Two (2004). (2006).
He has worked as an actor on and off throughout his career, co-starring in David O. Russell’s war comedy Three Kings (1999) and appearing in supporting roles in Bennett Miller’s Moneyball (2011) and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), as well as a recurring role in the comedy series The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret (2010-2012) and cameo appearances in his own films. Jonze co-founded Directors Label and Palm Pictures with filmmakers Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry. He is currently Vice Media, Inc.’s creative director.
